Temperature spikes, brown downs, picnic-lightening, storms out of no where and murder hornets… ok, maybe not the hornets but there are a LOT of reasons why power fluctuations, surges and loss are a real thing and a real danger to the machines in your sewing room.
Even just dirty energy (you know like when your house takes that little pause when the AC kicks on?) take a tole on our very expensive machines wearing on the motors and the circuit boards during our daily use. The goal is to have clean power and the way to do that is to condition your power with what is known as an….
Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)
Now, this is no dinky power strip with a surge protector, honestly those just don’t have what you need to keep your equipment safe, in fact with the multiple outlets in them most of us are prone to way overloading the common strip protector in a way that is more dangerous than productive.
What I am talking about it about as heavy as 8 bricks and bigger than a toaster and your home power enters it, is “cleaned and regulated” coming out and being delivered to your precious machine at a steady rate that does not tax the pricey bits of your machine like the motor or the computerized brain.
Many of these wonders have a digital readout that shows the fluxes in power as it comes in and the nice steady stream going out, it is very satisfying to watch. Also with the cleaning of the power they also serve as reserve batteries lasting 5-20 minutes and surge protectors should things really start to go off the rails with a lightening strike or just a summer brown-down while you are in the middle of a two hour embroidery design! This 5-20 minutes gives you time to safely shut down and save any projects that you were working on.
As I work on my plans for my new sewing room I am making room in my budget for a new UPS for each of my machines as well as the sewing room computer. Yes, it is an investment but not near what you will have to pay to replace your beloved machine in the case of a power incident.
Over in the private BadAss Quilters Community nestled within MaddieKertay.com I will be sharing my top 4 favorite UPS models as well talking more about how to protect your machines from harm and undo aging past that of just unplugging them when you are not in your sewing room. Not to mention i am giving away a UPS Back up unit to one lucky Community member!
