Welcome to thread school my friends! Don’t worry there will not be any tests but there will be prizes! I am very excited to be partnering with the people from Hab + Dash for this whole series! Like that first day of school where you prayed you would not be given homework, today is an overview of what is coming and your first chance to win!
While at one time thread was considered almost an after thought to the sewing experience we now know that the right thread of the right quality can make or break your project from the moment you thread it onto your machine.
Good thread is NEVER a bad investment and over the coming weeks we will be talking about, types of thread, thread care, thread storage, composition, twist, sheen, weight and more and how to decide which threads are best for the what and the way YOU SEW!
We are also going to address some of the old wives tales that really need to go away like the one that says synthetic threads will “cut” your fabric and you should only use cotton….. oh no my friend, the age of the threads spun from polymers is a blessing and while cotton will always have it’s place there are SO MANY reasons to love our modern threads and you are seriously missing out if you buy into the “cotton or nothing” way of thinking.
The fact is that we all have choices to make each day, about the projects we work on, what we get done and the products we use and I am always going to be be “team-quality” when it comes to the things I pick for using in my sewing room and I am going to encourage you to be on this team as well and start by weeding out old, linty, no-name and “bargain” threads from your stash. This makes room for great threads that will not only serve you, will they will be kind to your machine as well!
I have been all {heart eyes} for Glide thread for quite a few years now for both quilting and for my embroidery machine. Glide is a trilobal polyester thread produced from high-tenacity filament yarn. It gains it’s strength from its trilobal make up and yet maintains a soft sheen like that of rayon and yet unlike rayon it stands up to bleaching a real world care. Glide is virtually lint free which is a kindness to any machine running hard and fast since there is little to nothing to gunk up your bobbin casing or you tension discs. Glide is pretty much my dream thread when it comes to quilting and embroidery so the fact that I have the chance to give some away for each session of BAQS Thread School tickles me to no end!
The thread you pick matters. Where you buy it from matters as well! We suggest our favorite BadAss Quilter Certified store for Glide – Vector Quilts and Sewing Center. With the FULL line of Glide as well as being a store that ticks all the BadAss Quilter boxes when it come to BAQS ethos I am super pleased to enthusiastically recommend them to you!
