I know I say this all the time but DAMN!.. I am so blessed to be part of such a rockin community of people who are putting themselves out there artistically, it really just blows me away some days! Today I want to introduce you to to Sheila Frampton Cooper and wonderful quilt artisan I met via all my friends on Facebook.
The first time I saw her work I was just blown over!
Her use of color and form are so evocative and energy filled that you can’t help but be drawn to them!
So needless to say that when she said yes to my request (grovel?) to be our BadAss Quilter of the week I was pretty stoked for her to say yes!
Sheila was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and straight from the crib she showed a strong-willed, artistic temperament and has been creating art since her earliest memories.
She has tried it all. From oil, acrylic and watercolor painting to jewelry-making and architectural photography, these were mere pit stops to her current passion of studio art quilts.
Her passion lies with improvisational piecing, as well as painting with thickened dyes and various aspects of surface design.
The world is her inspiration, whether it’s a butterfly on her windowsill, a bird in her garden or the colors of a tropical fish, Sheila finds inspiration in the natural world as well as the bustling metropolis.
The play of nature against man made structure manifests itself in her work through bold, graphic designs juxtaposed with more quiet and flowing, amorphous creations.
Fiber art became a driving passion in 2010 and since then Sheila has won awards at major quilt shows, including Libby Lehman’s Judges Recognition for her quilt, “Fantasyland” at the AQS Show in Paducah.
She’s been featured in several publications and appears on an episode of The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims; she curated the exhibit, “Perspectives: Fantasy and Reality” at Road to California; her quilt, “From a Seed” was juried into the 2013 Quilt National Exhibition; her work has been on display at the Oceanside Museum of Art; and in 2014 and 2015 she will be teaching several workshops.
Sheila lives in Van Nuys, California where she also shoots architectural photography. Sheila is a member of Studio Art Quilt Associates and the Los Angeles Artist Association.

Want to take a class with Sheila? I know I do! Here are some details! ( I am thinking that I need to invite her to SPOOL!)
Express Your True Self: One Piece at a Time
Explore the mystery and excitement of creating a pieced abstract quilt with little or no plan. Students will start with small color studies and then move to a larger piece. We will discuss basic design and composition, color and value, quilting, and most importantly, trusting your instincts. Sheila will demonstrate construction techniques for sewing curved seams and discuss some of the challenges you may run into with spontaneous design and piecing. One-on-one time will be spent with each student.
Come with an open mind and an open heart and we’ll journey into the vast space of creative bliss.
