Psssst, Can we talk? Are you really happy with the way your quilts smell even after they have just come out of the laundryroom?
I can honestly say I had those times and then they went away. They went away when I got my fancy-pants front loading washing machine that was suppose to be the be-all end all of washing.
THE PROBLEM
And while for daily loads it is just fine and yes I do clean the gasket and all the other things you are suppose to do the fact is that even though they have the room to wash a quilt there is just not enough fresh water used to a really clean quilts well. (IMHO)
Of course I could haul all the quilts to the big commercial laundry but who has time for that?…
THE SOLUTION
Oddly the solution as as simple as looking at your local weather forecast. Rain is your friend my dears and never will your quilts smell so fresh or be so clean as when you put them out in a heavy rain for an hour or more.
HOW TO
All you will need is a safe location and a clean sheet. I tend to use the rail of my deck but in a pinch will even use the hood of my car! Just lay down a clean sheet and then lay out your quilt. Let the rain do the work by washing through your quilt for at least an hour.
Then gather it all up in a laundry basket and bring it back inside and throw it into the washer and set it to spin. Spin out all the rain water and then dry as usual. I do put my quilts in the dryer, usually with tennis balls that I have tied in clean tube socks to keep everything moving around and getting uniformly dry.
Pull it out when dry and take a big sniff! – CLEAN
