I got up this morning and hemmed a new pair of pants I scored at the thrift store. And if I do say so myself I did an amazing job. Tiny perfect blind hem stitches and now my pants are the perfect length for me and yes, I am a quilter.
To be clear being a quilter does not obligate one to hem pants, not your own and not those of the rando guy at your office but the “I don’t hem because I am a quilter” trope gets it all wrong and in a dangerous way.
Our NO Never Needs to be Conditional
Again, you don’t have to mend/hem/make anything you don’t want to but that right comes from your basic right to say NO as a woman with no need to hide behind the title of quilter.
Let that sink in, you can say NO, just because you are human and don’t want to do that particular thing. Further hot-take, you don’t have explain WHY you don’t want to do something either.
Yes, I know the common quilter’s t-shirt of “NO, I won’t hem your pants, I am a Quilter” is sold to be funny and sassy but what it supports is the idea that our right as women to say NO is conditional and that is nothing I personally want to endorse, how about you?
