zip it good

Zip it, zip it good!

Zippers, can’t live with them, can’t painfully zip up delicate body parts without them!  Possibly not the slogan first used by zipper makers around the world but possibly the best truth ever uttered about them as well.

Zippers strike fear into the hearts of many and yet once mastered ( it is really not that hard) they are fast, easy and work most of the time.

Unless they don’t.

And when they don’t bags don’t close, pants don’t stay up, humanity as we know it hangs in the balance, or not.

A lot of people just throw away items when zippers break. Some of the best coats I have ever scored at the thrift have been ones missing zipper pulls. Like BRAND-FREAKING-NEW coats with all that is wrong with them is that they have had a zipper malfunction. Hell in two of the coats the zipper pull was even in the pocket!  Let this not be you!

Get into the zipper game

Embrace your stash and scrap pile, put on your big girl panties ( or jock strap!)  and make some cute pouches to get over your fear of zippers once and for all. There are about a million zippy bag tutorials out there, some Great and other like crap ( now really did you think I was going to hot link you to a crappy one?) and the same for patterns. Some are awesome and totally worth forking over your money for – like one from Hunter’s Design Studio  or this one by Hugs n’ Kisses or the scalloped cutie  and some not so much.

But if tragedy should befall your project or your pants knowing how to put the slide back on is a skill for every boy/girl scout to know.  Let’s look at a simple plastic zipper and how to get the pull back on track.

And while your brains are growing bigger did you ever wonder why a whole bunch of zippers that you see say YKK on them?…. well check this out as well!  Don’t you feel smarter?

The zippers used in today’s demo are Atkinson zippers, score a candy colored selection here.
